Man dies during stand-off with armed police

A man has died during a stand-off with armed police in east London.

Officers were called to an address in Weston Green, Dagenham, on Thursday evening by a man who said he planned to take his own life.

The man, believed to be aged 40, also told police he had loaded firearms.

Armed police attended the scene and attempted to engage with the man with the help of a specialist negotiator.

However, around 9pm, shots were fired by police.

Police and paramedics attempted to provide first aid to the man, but he was pronounced dead at 9.30pm.

Officers later carried out a search of the property and found a gun in the property.

They said nobody else was believed to have been on the premises at the time.

The Metropolitan Police’s Directorate of Professional Standards and the Independent Office for Police Conduct have been informed of the incident,

Frontline Policing Commander for North and East London Commander Kyle Gordon said: “My thoughts are with the loved ones of the man who has died, with the local community in Dagenham and the officers involved in this incident.

“While formal identification has yet to take place, officers believe he was aged 40. His next of kin has been informed.

“They will receive our full support.”
