Rail strike: Transport Secretary defends position as network grinds to a halt

Commuters are facing travel chaos today as RMT workers begin a four-day strike.

Walkouts are planned today, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday with the freezing weather expected to further compound traveller misery.

Transport Secretary Mark Harper told Sky he was being “fair to the taxpayer” but refused to deny that he had required trains without guards be part of negotiations with the RMT.

Driver-only operated trains are a red line for the union.
